The look of pride on this young man’s face was a common expression worn by many of the people of PNG I was fortunate enough to photograph. It brings great honor to them, their family, and their tribe to be called out in such a manner. I initially thought they might feel I was “stealing their souls” but I would actually be sincerely thanked for taking their pictures. This man is from Suave in the Simbu Province of PNG.
Order PrintsPNG is a snapshot in time, with the tribes of the Highlands seeing outsiders for the first time in 1930. Headhunting and cannibalism are traditional practices that were only recently subdued through heavy missionary influence. The rugged terrain maintained tribal isolation resulting in 800 unique languages and cultures. The few travelers who visit this amazing country are rewarded with an adventure of a lifetime.
