A small town in the Eastern Highlands, Kainantu has little besides the open market and the cultural center in town which makes traditional crafts such as the pottery pictured here. Kainantu is known as a somewhat dangerous town due to the ~75% unemployment which is common in PNG. Police escorts are advised particularly at night when the rascols (bandits) prey on slow moving vehicles on the potholed dirt roads.
Order PrintsPNG is a snapshot in time, with the tribes of the Highlands seeing outsiders for the first time in 1930. Headhunting and cannibalism are traditional practices that were only recently subdued through heavy missionary influence. The rugged terrain maintained tribal isolation resulting in 800 unique languages and cultures. The few travelers who visit this amazing country are rewarded with an adventure of a lifetime.
