The character in the hardened faces of the PNG people is wrought by hard living, unimaginable by westerners. The strength of the stalky, sinewy men exudes from every pore. It amazed me how the wary gazes could be turned into huge grins if I initiated contact.

PNG is a snapshot in time, with the tribes of the Highlands seeing outsiders for the first time in 1930. Headhunting and cannibalism are traditional practices that were only recently subdued through heavy missionary influence.
